Test Your Air Quality IQ

What is a whole house load calculation and what is it for?
Before buying a new HVAC system, you should ask your Heating & Cooling contractor for his computerized equipment sizing calculations. These calculations will eliminate guess work and make sure you are working with a qualified Home Comfort Specialist.

If replacing an existing system, do you have hot or cold spots?
A whole house load calculation will tell us why and give us the information to correct the problem.

Do you have family members with allergies or breathing issues?
During our Comfort Home Analysis, we can give you options to make your home healthier.

Do you have a home that is too humid or dry?
Common complaints given by homeowners with humidity issues are static shocks, dry skin and bloody noses in the winter. Also mold and mildew in the summer. We have solutions to help you overcome these issues.

Power bills too high?
According to the Department of Energy, the typical home waste 25-40% through their heating/cooling system. This could be from an original faulty installation, an old inefficient HVAC system, or an improperly tuned up system.

Should you not know the answers to solving these problems, we can help. Please call us today to set up an appointment for a whole house Comfort Survey by one of our trained Residential Specialist.

Homeowners Heating & Cooling Service Checklist

The best investment you can make to protect your home comfort equipment is a preventive maintenance plan with a certified NATE specialist. Between services you can do your part by watching for potential problems. Early detection and correction of the following may save you discomfort and money:

  • Listen for unusual and new noises in the system.
  • Watch for a build up of dirt or dust on your grills and registers.
  • Watch for a build up of grass clippings or leaves in your outdoor unit.
  • Watch for a build up of ice, weeds, or shrubs blocking your outdoor unit.
  • Watch for water dripping from the overflow pipe in your attic unit.
  • Do you see water marks on your ceilings when no rain was in site?
  • Do you suffer from headaches, virus symptoms, or feel weak in the winter (gas & oil Systems)?
  • Have you experienced a dramatic increase in your utility bills?
  • Dose your home have a musty odor in the summer?

Service Tips:

  1. If you use LP or fuel oil, do not let your tank run low or run out of fuel.
  2. If your unit will not start, check your breakers status, thermostat status, and filter.
  3. Change your filter regularly. It is one of the key factors to maintain system life and potentially your health!

Our management team and employees are dedicated to improving the quality of the environment and conserving energy for not only our clients; but also, our company. We are taking the following actions to demonstrate our commitment to thinking “Green” in all we do:

At Waldrop, we realize that “Green” has become a new culture and way of thinking by our clients and our world. We are on board with this concept and have “Green” as a component of our corporate culture.

Variable Speed Technology

The US Department of Energy has indicated that 65% of electrical energy used in commercial and industrial systems comes from electrical motors powering centrifugal pumps and fans. Of the government’s total energy usage, 45% comes from the heating, cooling, and ventilating of buildings.

Huge savings can be accomplished through the use of variable speed technology (VST).

When retrofitting systems with VST, payback periods are ranging from one to two years depending on the type, size, and application of the system. It is estimated that motors incorporating VST and linked to the building’s DDC system, are up to 65-70% more efficient than motors operating at a constant speed at voltage.

It is usually only on the hottest and coldest days of the year that systems must operate at 100% capacity. Systems with variable speed fan motors allow the airflows to exactly match the system’s heating and cooling demands and offers the opportunity to save electrical energy and money.

VST also contribute to the overall comfort level within the building by regulating air and water flow as according to the instantaneous heating and cooling load. Closer system temperatures and humidity set points can be controlled with variable air and water flows within the HVAC system, resulting in higher human comfort levels, Noise levels are also reduced with the use of VST on system motors.

VST also eliminate short cycling of motors, which will result in longer life of the motors and driven equipment.

Green Initiatives

With today's economic uncertainty, it is important to keep operating expenses to a minimum. The big difference between companies that weather these difficult times and those that do not survive will be whether they have reduced unnecessary expenditures before it is too late.

One unnecessary cost that should be cut is the expense of running building utilities inefficiently. While this has historically been viewed as the cost of doing business, it is no longer a fiscal necessity. Waldrop Mechanical Services is here to help!

A good building energy audit will help reduce your energy costs by 10% to 40%. For large organizations, this can be substantial, and could be the difference between staying afloat and going under.

What is a Commercial Energy Audit?

A commercial building energy audit is a study of your building's energy using equipment. The auditor will study a facility, identifying energy conservation opportunities, interviewing facility personnel, and quickly reviewing the facility's utility bills. Commercial energy audits are for organizations that want to know what they can do to reduce their energy usage and costs.

The auditor will develop a list of energy conservation actions, identifying no-cost or low-cost energy measures that can substantially reduce energy usage and costs. Some actions will take longer to pay for themselves, while others will start paying for themselves within months. We investigate energy savings potential in:

  • Lighting systems
  • HVAC Systems and Controls
  • Compressed Air Systems
  • Renewable Energy Applications
  • Electric Motors and Drives
  • Process Systems
  • Steam Systems
  • Heat Recovery
  • Building Envelope Upgrades
  • Switching Utility Providers or Utility Rates

What should I look for when choosing a contractor?

A quality contractor:

  • Complies with state and local codes and regulations and carries the proper business and workers' compensation insurance.
  • Is prompt, courteous and provides fast, reliable service while attempting to perform service at your convenience.
  • Has the skill and knowledge to not only service your equipment, but if necessary, to design and install the right system for you.
  • Is up to date on the newest developments in equipment, technology and design procedures in order to choose and install a system which will be the most efficient and most reliable system for you.
  • Listens to your problems and cares about your comfort.

When should I repair or replace my equipment?

To repair or replace, that is the question that likely comes to mind whenever your heating or cooling system stops working like it should. Although repairing may be the most affordable solution now, it might not be the best choice over the long run.

  • When the cost of repairs approaches 50% of the value of your heating or cooling system, it's generally time to replace the system.
  • Even if needed repair costs aren't quite as daunting as 50%, you might want to replace your system if it's more than 12 years old or you've had a history of problems with it.
  • For lower utility costs. A new high -efficiency home comfort system can save you hundreds of dollars each year in energy costs, compared to an older system.
  • For energy tax credits. You could recover up to 30% of the cost of the new high-efficient system.
  • For enhanced comfort. Advanced technologies that improve energy efficiency also enhance your comfort, so you can enjoy more even temperatures, better humidity control and a constant flow of conditioned air.
  • Efficiency is expressed in terms of Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER, values. SEER values are stated as numbers, usually 10 through 18 with higher numbers being more efficient than lower ones.
  • A 13 SEER heat pump / air conditioner (the minimum level now made in the USA, by Federal law) is about 30 percent more efficient than one with a 10 SEER rating. That means the higher the SEER rating, the more you save on energy bills.
  • If your heat pump / air conditioning equipment is 8 to 12 years old, its useful life expectancy is just about gone.
