Press Release - Wofford Dorms

The West Oak Middle School project consisted of the construction of a new middle school for the Oconee County School District. The new single story facility includes 65 new classrooms, a kitchen and cafeteria, a gymnasium and locker areas, science laboratories, a medical center, and an administrative office area.

The building consists of a single story facility consisting of 4 interconnected buildings of masonry structure with an architectural brick façade. The mechanical construction consisted of the installation of a four-pipe system supporting the distribution of both hot and chilled water throughout the facility. The main piping and duct systems were constructed along a cat slab in the mechanical mezzanine area located in the attic space for distribution throughout the buildings. The buildings are cooled with 410 tons of capacity supplied by two water-cooled chillers. Hot water is supplied via 2 boilers providing 100 total horsepower. The installation of 13 air handlers and 81 blower coils distribute the conditioned air throughout the space. The mechanical system is controlled by a direct digital controls system that provides graphical information for trending building performance, maintenance planning, and allows remote access to information regarding current building conditions and operations of the various mechanical systems. The plumbing scope included the construction of 10 gang bathrooms, 14 individual bathrooms, a new kitchen, and connections to various equipment in the science laboratories.

Waldrop Mechanical Services self-performed 95% of all piping, plumbing, and sheetmetal activities. The firm subcontracted all insulation, building controls and test/balance activities.
